What’s Happening This Week In the Latino Community

Thanks to the LatinoLoop, we got the latest scoop for this week!

1) The Pope’s visit to the U.S. kicked off with his arrival in Washington D.C. this week with plans to give 18 speeches total during his visit, four of which will be in English (including his address to a joint session of Congress) and the other 14 speeches in his native Spanish. Today the Pope canonized Junipero Serra, marking the first canonization on U.S. soil.

2)  Latin GRAMMY nominations were announced this morning with Leonel Garcia leading the pack with six nominations, followed by Natalia Lafourcade with five nominations. Juan Luis Guerra and Alejandro Sanz; engineers Edgar Barrera, Demián Nava, and Alan Saucedo; and producer Cachorro López each received four nominations. Vicentico, Pablo Alborán, Miguel Bosé and Ricky Martin each earned three nominations. Other nominees include Kinky, Julieta Venegas, Ruben Blades, Pepe Aguilar, Bomba Estereo, Calle 13, Astro, Diamante Electrico, Los Autenticos Decadentes and No Te Va Gustar. The 16th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, set for Thursday, Nov. 19th in Las Vegas and will air live on Univision.

3)  NBCUniversal has named Cesar Conde to the newly created position of Chairman of NBC Universal Group and NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, which includes the Telemundo Network, NBC Universo Cable Network, Telemundo International, Telemundo Local Stations, Telemundo Digital Media and Emerging Business and NBC Deportes.

4)  Verizon Communications announced that it would begin offering roaming wireless services in Cuba next week, becoming the first U.S. cellphone company to do so. Telecommunications equipment, technology and services were among the first exemptions to a U.S. economic embargo of the island after Washington and Havana announced plans to restore diplomatic relations in December.

5)  J Balvin kicked off his U.S. tour with Becky G. this week, sponsored by Toyota and Coors Light. The tour will hit 20 cities across the country.

6)  Alex Lopez Negrete, President, CEO and co-founder of Lopez Negrete Communications, was awarded the Ohtli Award by the government of Mexico at a ceremony during the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce convention in Houston this week for his commitment to lifting the Mexican and Latino community.

7) Univision will launch UniNovelas, a mobile app designed to create an interactive telenovela fan community. The app will offer news feeds, video and photo content users can share, character blogs and fan contests, among other user experiences and kicks off with Antes Muerta que Lichita, which premieres next week.

8)  New data released by Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate and the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals® (NAHREP) shows that Hispanic women are the key decision makers when it comes to home buying, including researching neighborhoods, finance options and the final purchase.

9)  Daddy Yankee and Don Omar’s upcoming tour stop at Puerto Rico’s El Coliseo sold out in less than 24 hours. “The KingDom,” which kicked off last week at Madison Square Garden, will visit over 65 cities throughout Latin America and the United States.

10)  El Rey Network has renewed “Lucha Underground”, which will return for a second season in early 2016.

11)  Sony Music announced that it has signed a multiyear global licensing deal for the catalog of Cuba’s national record company Egrem.

12)  Preliminary research based on the latest available federal government data shows that about 295,000 babies were born to unauthorized-immigrant parents in 2013, counting as 8% of the 3.9 million U.S. births that year, following a downward trend that peaked in 2007 when 370,000 babies were born to unauthorized-immigrants.

13)  Enrique Rodriguez has been named EVP and Chief Technical Officer at AT&T. The former Cisco Systems and Microsoft exec will oversee the U-verse and DirecTV merger which was finalized this past July.

14)  Claudia Sandoval was crowned as the season six winner of Fox’s MasterChef, the reality competition where talented home cooks are given the chance to prove themselves in the culinary world. At the end of its sixth season, MasterChef ranks as the season’s No. 1 cooking show on television.

14)  Chicago-based experiential marketing and entertainment agency Revolucion Marketing has recruited marketing veterans Andrea Botero, Dania Echeverri, and Cebele Marquez, who together bring over 50 years of experience in marketing.

16)  According to Nielsen Twitter TV ratings, the final episode of Sabado Gigante was the most social non-sports series that night with over 75,000 tweets reaching over 1.1 million Twitter users.

17)  Emilio Estefan’s “We’re All Mexican” video/song was released this week and features a collage of images and videos of Latino personalities, including Thalia, Wyclef, Pitbull, Carlos Santana, Carlos Vives as well as Whoopi Goldberg, Eva Longoria, and Kathy Griffin. Watch the video here.

18)  Xfinity TV customers can get two weeks of free access now through October 4th to XFinity on Demand with over 3,500 hours of Latino on-demand entertainment and can also access content on the Xfinity TV Go app and Xfinity.com/Latino.

19)  Santa Cruz Communications, a public relations agency with offices in Miami and Los Angeles, will work with Telemundo as PR agency for the first ever Latin American Music Awards. Telemundo has previously worked with Santa Cruz communications for the Billboard Latin Music Awards and Premios Tu Mundo. The Latin AMA’s will take place on Thursday October 8th.

10)  Atlanta based rapper Raury made his Late Night With Stephen Colbert debut last night wearing a Mexico soccer jersey with the name Trump crossed out on the back. Donald Trump was also a guest on the show that evening, but he left the studio before Raury took the stage. Raury told Vice News “Trump embodies separation, solving problems with anger, fear, and personal differences,” and later tweeted “I got love for my Hispanic community I stand with all people in times of oppression.”
